On 6 June 1998 four mountaineers from Bristol and Edinburgh set off on an expedition to one of the remotest areas on earth. The Rignys Bjerg area of Arctic East Greenland had never been visited. It is 300km from the nearest habitation - Ittoqqortoormiit, a small settlement with a population of 480.
We explored the glaciers by ski, towing our tents, food and fuel in sleds (known as pulks) and made first ascents of some of the mountains. Though we had 24 hour daylight the temperature could still drop to -20șC when the sun dipped towards the horizon. Polar bears were the only company we might have had during our three weeks in the mountains.
