Fri 19 Aug 2005 Family camping at Mount Folly Farm Very windy when we arrived on this exposed, basic site with amazing views. Jan, Molly, Brenda and Morrigan had arrived earlier so we all walked down to the beach at Bigbury-on-Sea We walked back up at about 7pm, put up the tent and fed the kids before George and Pete arrived at about 8pm. Brenda drove round to Challaborough to fetch fish and chips and we sat around the barbecue into the evening. The almost-full moon rose into a clear sky. A flashing light out to sea seemed to be coming from the direction of Lizard Point, 60 miles away. I later found out this was the Eddystone Lighthouse, only 20 mles away. After a lazy start on Saturday we headed to the beach again. With the tide out there was more sand and the wind had died down a bit. We were able to walk across to Burgh Island and up to the ruined chapel at the top of the hill. We had a barbecue back at the campsite. On Sunday we had another lazy morning before heading down to Cockleridge and the ferry across to Bantham This looks like a great place for a family canoe trip: From Aveton Gifford, catch the ebb tide down to the beach at Bantham. After some time there, catch the flow tide (about 2 hours after low water) back to the start. The boys were asleep almost as soon as we set off and we were home in 2 hours, 20 minutes. | ||||||
